Cisco have been selling their 3G/HSPA HWICs for quite a while now and I've noticed a growing trend of companies starting to utilise these as their backup links over obsolete/slow ISDN links. These cards reach 7.2Mbps downstream and 2Mbps upstream. I hear certain blokes in Sydney couldn't get it together but hey, you can't expect too much from them

What connector is that? and how much do the HWICs go for??
Also not sure but do you need an IOS thaat supports 3G?

C'mon Blacky, you should recognise the connector! It's your old friend 1m extension cable - standard TNC. The only Cisco stuff you'll find with a weird connector would be the wireless gear which is RP-TNC but that seems to be the defacto standard for wireless connectors that aren't SMA or RP-SMA.

Anyways, they start at around $720 for the 3G/GSM HWIC and the IOS requirement is anything above 12.4(15)T but anyone with a SmartNet service contract or PICA should be able to get that.

These do look good for a more permanent 3G connection. But with most server rooms being well inside buildings antenna cables will have to be a fair length.

As for the 3G, $720 is a fair investment. I guess its made for enterprise. Good for redundancy.

SIM card socket; compliant with ISO-7816-2 (SIM mechanical) and GSM 11.11

Looks like a standard sim insert. Just find a good plan I guess. I'm sure with all the routers at Jimmys house he could fit one of these.

would have to be a decent plan if your going to use it as a backup for a commercial type setup! 2gb would disapear in no time, especially if your running all voip and internet.
