Car Key Transponder issue

Postby RantRex » Fri May 15, 2009 7:28 pm

A question to the gurus.

Lost my car keys over the weekend and they turned up in the washing machine. After the transponder dried out it worked ok. But the detergent has started to aggressively corrode the circuit board and the components (transistor legs/IC pins). It wont be long before the delicate circuit board tracks open circuit.

So what can I do to get rid of the corrosion that's started and is there a product to coat the board with to prevent further corrosion ?

Cant your local key shop make a new key ? I'm pretty sure they can do the electronic ones now.

i would prefer to save the key as it seems to work fine. Hopefully save myself a few dollars. Their must be some method used to clean circuit boards.

You can get circuit cleaner in a spray bottle from alot of places but if it has already started to corrode the pins etc then cleaning it isn't going to stop the corrosion it is only going to slow it down .. Unless the corrosion is only very minor.

Good luck

im pretty sure using some of these sprays can leave a residue behind that will still end up coroding it. Im pretty sure good ol' water, some time to dry completley and some air in a can will slow it down as well.

Doens't Fish Oil stop / slow down corrosion ?,, But yeah I 'm with Blacky.. Wash and dry.. get out the hair dryer.. and dry well... But it is also my understanding that once it starts, you can't really stop it.

In saying all that, I just had a new car and transponder priced for my car, $80..

Best option is buying isopropyl alcohol to clean the surface, brush with a toothbrush clean this will evaporate while scrubbing. Or a electrical contact cleaner spray can they have a bit of the alcohol in the can. Then there are some spray cans that leaves a slight rubber residue to cover exposed soldering or pins.

Get in there early or the corrosion will just build up. I did this with my television remote after my youngest dropped it in Mr Hankys house one day. Thankfully I didn't have to fork out the fortune for a new one. Still works 2 years later.
