Old school telstra connector

Postby 4wdKing » Sun May 31, 2009 4:36 pm

Hey all,
I have an old school tesltra connection on the wall and its fallen off. It has two wires connected (red and black). The Blue and white are hanging out. Are they all ment to be connected? My naked dsl seems to work ok through it still but a test on http://www.speedtest.net shows my speeds are well below the average for iinet.....any ideas?

Yes, you only need two wires unless you have more than one phone number in the house, then some of the others would be used. But normally the pairs are:
Red + Green
Yellow + Black
Blue + White
If it's wired correctly, the signal for line one should be on the red and green and so on down the list. Red is ring (positive) and green is tip (negative).

But it can depend on the age of the wiring too.

If it's working then don't mess with it.
An eye for eye only ends up making the whole world blind

Old Cat 3 cable had the colour codes
Red + Black
Blue + White

Your old connector is a 610 or 611 depends if other devices where setup before.

611 was used for fire alarms and faxes.

610 was the normal connector and had only two pairs coming in.

Either Red + Black were hooked up or Blue + White

If I remember correctly they were wired up to the 1 and 5 copper prongs coming from the connector.

If the others were hooked up they were put in the 2 and 6 copper prongs.

was playing around uploading some stuff today and noticed my 3G wireless broadband uploads quicker then my ADSL2+

This is not good right? I think the cabling in my house is dodgy! im getting 9kbps upload for ADSL2+ and 30-40kbps upload for 3G wireless!!

I would do a adsl2+ test. Just because you have the speed doesn't mean you always going to download fast.

http://www.adsl2exchanges.com.au/ go there run a test. The biggest loss you get is for cable distance from exchanges. The bigger the distance the slower the connection.

The next issue for downloading is the servers your downloading from. If they have a quick connection or if its a torrent how many people you are downloading off.

try the connection test and post up if you a have a slow connection and we can source solutions for you.
