3 customers can roam to some parts of the NextG network provided they have a phone (or modem) that's capable of using 850MHz UMTS. In general, they can only use NextG in areas outside 3's Broadband Zone. However telstra only allow this if their is some other network competition in the area. If not telstra holds the monopoly and it wont roam.

So thats farked then, I wont use my sisters address in the City to get a phone on 3. Only cause Optus is so so here, I get 300kb/s down on my 3g modem with Optus but yeah not in all places.

So how does that help the city slickers? traveling to the country for the weekend? No phone service cause of Telstra has the coverage over most rural areas.

I am more outer suburbs of Sydney and never really had a problem good connection speeds and decent dowloads. I just have the 3G usb stick and been mostly to different towns. Good connection and have connected to the HSDA. Been to Adeliade remote area and Melbourne and worked each time. If I new I was going to be in more remote areas I wouldn't mind getting the Telstra one but the prices for downloads are way out of proportion than other networks. Superior coverage shouldn't mean a price hike of that much.

You're not just paying for superior coverage, you're paying for superior coverage, superior backhaul, and superior speeds.

Check out Whirlpool for threads complaining about Optus and Vodafone speeds.

Meanwhile I'll keep chilling with iPhone tethered internet wherever I am in the country...
