THE new Apple iPhone has officially been launched in Australia with hundreds lining up early friday morning to get their hands on the device.

On the streets of Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane many joined the queue for the Optus midnight launch.

IT worker Mina Abdallah was the first person to receive his handset in Sydney.

“I gave away my old iPhone so that I can get the new one,” he said.

“I expect it to be faster. I expect the graphics card will be better to play the new games.”

Mr Abdallah, who had been in line since 6.30pm, was enjoying the attention he was receiving for being first in line.

“I am really happy. I’ve been hugged and have been interviewed from left and right. It’s pretty cool,” he said.

“It would have been much better if we were one of the first countries in the world to get the new iPhone.”

Is there really that much difference to the old one? I guess if the improvements are that great then i'll think about getting one. However i don't think Optus will let me out of my current contract all that lightly!

7.2mbit HSDPA modem.

Nuff said.

Alas I'm stuck until November 2010 with my 16GB 3G.

They might let you out if you promise to go on another 24 month contract with the new I-phone for like 4 years haha.

Talked to Telstra the other day missus thought she had run out of contract. Still had 5 months but they said they would wavier 2-3 months to upgrade. Lucky for me I guess. Plans were pretty high and a couple had upfront payments to get the phone. I didn't see how long the contracts would have to have been 24 months.
