Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008

Postby AdamO » Tue Aug 18, 2009 11:07 pm

Hi all,

Playing with Group Policy and Windows 7 at the moment and thought some of you in particular would like me to post problems and solutions I find along the way.

So far its not looking good mainly due to the fact I'm not using 2008 R2 so I don't have the correct GP extensions and Microsoft in their wisdom has not made it backwards compatible. I do like the new way of mapping drives etc which can now be done independent of any scripts along with environmental, registry settings etc. The main issue I'm having at the moment is with resource redirection which I think has something to do with the fact they are introducing new power shell driven GP integration with Windows 7 and Server 2008 R2.

Anyhow I will update as I progress.

Adam.

I noticed here that you can define power policies for Vista and above

That'll teach the pesky sleep by default setting in Windows 7.

I'm also liking the System Starter GPOs - I'm lazy and like the idea of generic templates to apply to my environments. However something irritating to me is that licences don't carry over from vanilla S2k8 to R2 despite only minor additions.

I'm wondering about the interactions with Win S2k3 given Telstra's plans to go Windows 7. Poor ATO and Defence are going to be stuck with WinXP ;-)

Yes I'm also disappointed that I am going to have to source a copy of 2008 R2 however this aligns with 2003 R2 so I should have been expecting it.

I haven't looked into the System Starter GPOs yet as I am not lazy and like playing with things. As for Telstra, "formal testing when released"? Any company worth its weight would have got a hold of a Beta, you know so they can actually recommend changes based on short comings before a release candidate. I guess they will just complain about it after the fact instead.
