Does anyone know if you can attach a usb device to an Ipod touch or Iphone ?

What I want to be able to do is plug a memory card reader (specifically an SD reader) to the iphone to empty my cameras memory card while out and about ?

The way I figure it is having a 32 gig Itouch in my pocket while out and about is more "productive" than just having multiple memory cards , plus I will hopefully be able to see the images on the Itouch as well!!

At this stage, no. But, that's not to say that you won't be able to do it in the future.
The closest thing like that at the momment, are some apps that let you use your phone like a
thumb drive.
